12-Micron

Sydney

12-Micron lighting design by Electrolight

Description

Evocative of place, 12-Micron draws on the colours, tones and textures of the Spotted Gum. Exploring a uniquely ‘Sydney’ interior from stone floors to floating clouds. Beautifully realised, subtle and elegantly luxurious with careful planning to allow everyone, including staff, spectacular harbour views.

As part of the Barangaroo foreshore it was essential that a Sydney aesthetic be developed to harmonise, but not compete, with the harbour views. Drawing on Sydney’s native flora and urban context, the combination of a gridded pattern overlay is contrasted with the natural texture of eucalyptus.

The lighting brief was open to suggestion, based only on the ‘Spotted Gum’ interior concepts and a dining experience which connects with the uninterrupted views over Sydney Harbour. The combination of sculptured vaulted ceilings separated by spans of hanging fabric, offered a number of interesting but challenging opportunities for illumination throughout the modern restaurant setting. The open kitchen design sits as an internal focal point, enhancing guest’s involvement in the process.

The interiors present ample decoration and visual interest, so decorative lighting is kept to a minimum. Instead, the lighting concept looked to sit harmoniously within the interior finishes and textures, aiming to appreciate the open views and connecting with the movement of the surroundings. During the day, lighting would work with the natural light to draw the cool colours into the space through dynamic white light and controlled brightness. At night, the restaurant transforms into a series of warm, intimate spaces, capturing the warmth of the timber finishes to enrich the fine-dining experience.

A custom luminaire was designed for the vaulted ceilings, providing both direct and indirect illumination and allowing a controlled balance of illumination and luminance. A dynamic white light system was designed above the hanging fabric ceilings which not only provides a tailored colour temperature which adapts to the outdoor environment, but also to capture the movement of the water and sky. This subtle movement rolls through the restaurant from the façade to the core as waves of luminance through the fabric. Effective illumination on the tables is kept consistent, while the movement above suggests a direct connection to the natural movement of the harbour and clouds.

Linear LED integrates seamlessly into the Spotted Gum joinery, enhancing both colour and texture. Trimless detailing and cast-in luminaires to ceilings and walls feel like they are part of the built fabric. Controls are kept simple, with a time-scheduled series of scenes which adapt to the various moods of the day.
