Socialight is Electrolight’s contribution to the City of Melbourne and Federation Square to celebrate Light in Winter. A program of four events has been devised to celebrate the wonder and complexity of illumination and to bring community together through the exploration of light.

These events occur on the Wednesday evenings throughout the four weeks of the Light in Winter Festival in June 2011.

This blog will explore each of the events in more detail over the coming weeks but as a taster, this is what lighting lovers in Melbourne can look forward to:

LX1 – Wednesday 8th of June
Electrolight proudly presents a 75 minute hosted forum with Melbourne’s leading theatre lighting designers. Held in the intimate 80 seat ACMI Studio 1, audiences have the unique opportunity to hear how Melbourne’s lighting designers craft their designs and manage their process. Hear about the latest shows that they are working on and have the opportunity to ask questions. Be the first to get the inside knowledge on how it all works in the LX department.

Fabulous Foyers and Facades – Wednesday 15th of June
A 90 minute guided walk through the Melbourne CBD led by Electrolight to highlight the spectacular illuminated facades and foyers located in our beautiful city. Assemble at Fed Square and finish at the top of Eureka Tower for post event drinks.

Ready Steady Light – Wednesday 22nd of June
A four hour group activity between 12 and 4pm for pre-registered teams to construct a light object from found, recycled and provided materials. Your construction will then form a permanent part of the “Sacred Space” installation in the heart of Fed Square. With a road case of gear at your disposal and technical assistance, release your inner sculptural lighting designer and contribute to the wonder of Light in Winter. Works will be unveiled from 6pm, with a chance to win a designer light fitting for your efforts.

The Meaning of Light – Wednesday 29th of June
Following on from last year’s successful Meaning of Light hosted by Electrolight outside in ‘The Square,’ Meaning of Light moves out of the winter cold and into the warmth of ACMI Cinema 1.  A selection of invited guests share what light means to them and how it impacts the work that they make and present in the public realm. From acclaimed photographer Shannon McGrath to innovative craftsman Marc Pascal, cutting edge medical researcher Dr Tracey Sletten and more. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear why light matters to them.

This is by far the biggest community project the practice has undertaken and we hope you are excited about this as we are.
