Located in the heart of Karrinyup Shopping Centre sits The West Deck, a Town Square style plaza, providing open-air shopping and dining, offering guests entertainment and relaxation for a complete experience.
The lighting concept for the West Deck was driven by the desire to move away from conventional shopping centre outdoor lighting to a more sophisticated coastal resort-style feel. The challenge was to create a sense of intimacy, visual interest and discovery but still cater to all of the shopping centre’s safety and functional requirements. Electrolight developed a range of integrated lighting layers that reveal themselves in the evening and transform the West Deck from a bright and airy coastal shopping experience by day to a theatrical and spirited immersive experience by night.
The design features different character zones which perform a range of functions. A shady central lawn doubles as an event space. The lighting concept was to enhance the natural light and outdoor feel during the day, and help create a welcoming coastal resort terrace atmosphere at night. Low level and integrated lighting is layered with landscape lighting to trees and catenary spotlights above to enhance the relaxed coastal feel.
The space is defined by an extensive water feature that weaves through the site, changing as it goes. The central water feature is encircled by light on the outer edges to highlight its organic form. It creates a sensory experience for visitors to the site, encouraging tactile interactions and inviting people to pause.
Lighting is concealed within plantings, the water feature and perimeter tenancies. Our lighting design vision was to allow the organic structures to become luminous and alive, allowing light to breath through. The West Deck was to present as a natural but ethereal landscape, filled with magical flowing streams, winding paths and grassy relaxation hub to soak up the atmosphere.
Functional lighting is provided by catenary spotlights that are carefully coordinated with the surrounding facades to create an intimate feel in the evenings and deliberately different to typical outdoor civic lighting approaches. The catenary spans are designed to suspend between buildings with minimal visual clutter.
The Jesmonite facade panels encasing the West Deck presented a unique opportunity for lighting to not only provide an approach that reflected its organic form and engaging scale, but also to offer an immersive experience for adults and children to rever and reflect.
Working closely with the Architect and projection mapping specialist, an approach was strategized for the detailed design and installation of state-of-the-art video projectors, which from concealed locations seamlessly frame the facades without interruption any other elements within the space.
At the Southern end of the site, we provided an integrated media facade system to the Tavern facade in the form of an array of vertical colour-selectable LED lines of light. The LEDs are addressable to provide abstract light shows that invite users into the precinct.
We also worked closely with Seedesign Landscape Architects to integrate a range of lighting elements into the impressive Cubby playground space at the Northern end of the site. Colour selectable LEDs have been integrated within the structure of the Cubby to create a dynamic and playful addition to the precinct.
