255 California is a 182,528 square foot, class A office building situated in the vibrant Financial District of San Francisco. This architectural gem offers spacious, column-free floorplates, expansive windows, and a large landscaped balcony, setting it apart from others in the area.
Although it was originally John Hancock’s West Coast headquarters and a prominent example of early modernism in San Francisco, 255 California St. had faded into obscurity, mainly known for housing a busy Starbucks at the intersection of Battery and California streets. However, it possessed the potential to be transformed into a top-tier, Class A building, boasting desirable features such as unobstructed views, ample floor space, and a prime location.
The restoration project focused on highlighting the building’s grand two-story entrance adorned with arched concrete piers. Lighting played a pivotal role in revitalizing the structure. The iconic concrete arches, divided by the building overhang, now feature concealed illumination that casts a gentle glow onto the street level and up to the arches on the second floor. This uniform illumination seamlessly connects both elements of the arches, transforming them into a single iconic entity.
The main lobby has been completely refurbished and updated to align with the design aesthetics of the 21st century. Minimalism takes center stage in the entry experience, with cove lighting softly illuminating the ceilings and recessed linear lighting guiding tenants and visitors towards the elevator lobby. Subtle recessed track lighting accentuates art pieces without overpowering them.
Additionally, the second-floor Japanese garden, originally designed by Lawrence Halprin, has undergone refurbishment, and a golf putting green has been added. The putting green is already proving popular for company social gatherings. The newly illuminated arches create a dramatic effect in the garden spaces, while the addition of illumination underneath the heavy stone benches and fountain gives them a floating appearance. Illuminated perimeter trees enhance the depth of the exterior patio, creating a sense of security and contributing to the ambient lighting.
To ensure safety, a custom illuminated curb provides a designated path of egress, while playful decorative lighting on the turf adds a touch of whimsy.
