Koto

Canberra, Australia

Koto lighting design by Electrolight

Description

Koto is a new fine-dining Japanese restaurant located in ‘The Lobby’ on King Georges Terrace, Canberra. Constructed in 1975, this refurbished pavilion building stands on an open corner block in the Nations Triangle and has a long history as a function space for Australia’s politicians. The pavilion has been transformed into a contemporary dining experience, serving both traditional and modern Japanese sushi-style cuisine.

The original heritage listed Chinese-inspired architecture has been cleverly transformed into a Japanese-style pavilion complete with Zen gardens surrounding the elevated bridge entry. The landscape design and accompanying lighting scheme, complete with custom-designed lanterns, serve as a preface for the traditional Japanese storyline of the interiors within. Every design detail, texture and finish has been stitched into this project with authenticity and purpose. The aim was to create an immersive experience for both the eyes and the tastebuds – with a distinctively Japanese flavour.

On entry, the atmosphere is unmistakable. From the stone concierge lectern and the central Kumiko-style skylight feature, to the Washi lanterns and Ikebana flower arrangements, you could be dining in the gardens of Kyoto.

The lighting approach focuses on the primary features, sculpting the delicate timber forms and stone textures while accenting the focal points and main kitchen bar. It was important that the application of light appears as authentic as the architecture, utilising the finishes to create luminosity and ambience, while delivering accent lighting without obvious visibility of technical luminaires. Colour temperatures were shaped to feel more like candle-light to create a natural and inherent warmth using 2400K as the primary source – but with a mixture of 2700K for key features which demanded more focus.

From concept to detailed design, then documentation to construction, coordination and communication was critical in meeting the needs of such a detailed and bespoke crafted installation. Although the style is traditional, there are a number of more contemporary materials and finishes worked into the interiors. The lighting follows suit to create a fusion of old and new. Void of decorative luminaires, the architecture becomes the lantern through the embrace between structure, texture and light.

A DALI-based lighting control system provides flexibility of the scheme from day to night, with continuing variation and progressive luminance from the inside out to ensure the space is expressed as a lantern through the glazed façade.
