Is Fluoro Extrusion Dead?

Are the days of the ubiquitous fluorescent aluminium extrusion system numbered?  We think they might just be…

We saw a glimpse of the future today – a regular looking aluminium profile but inside, instead of a fluorescent lamp and reflector are modular LED boards.  The boards we saw produced a continuous line of light – goodbye dodgy dark patches where the fluoro tubes overlap. Just a clean, crisp line of light at whatever length you want.  Linear LED extrusion is not a new thing – it’s just that before now it has been priced too highly. Cost is the last frontier for getting the widespread uptake of such products and we have long held the belief that when this system gets to $300/m, fluoro will be dead. And guess what? Pricing we are seeing is coming in around $300/m with good quality Tridonic boards, Dali dimmable ballasts and integrated emergency lighting chips.

So farewell fluoro, you have been amazing, but there’s a new kid in town.
