Allens lighting design by Electrolight

Description

For Allens, a law firm with a 170-year heritage, their Melbourne client floor, designed by Hassell, required a lighting scheme that reflected a philosophy of “quiet luxury”—understated excellence and uncompromising quality. Our brief was to develop a lighting scheme that formed a true partnership with the architecture, creating a sophisticated backdrop that was both effective and unassuming. The lighting needed to enhance functionality while complementing and revealing the architectural materials, lines, and volumes of the prestigious 101 Collins Street space.

The innovation within this project is not a singular technology, but a disciplined, layered approach that prioritizes subtlety and longevity over ostentation. We moved beyond simply meeting standards for illuminance, focusing instead on the quality and emotional impact of light. By emphasizing vertical illumination through carefully detailed wall washing and integrated cove lighting, we defined spaces by their surfaces and textures, creating an atmosphere of warmth and visual comfort that a standard, top-down approach could not achieve.

Flexibility is woven into the design. Extensive use of flexible track systems in the gallery, reception, and breakout areas allows for luminaires to be re-positioned and re-aimed to accommodate changing art collections, furniture layouts, or special events. In meeting rooms, integrated systems offer both directional and diffuse lighting, enabling pre-set scenes for various functions, from video conferencing to presentations. This adaptability is enhanced by a DALI control system, allowing for nuanced scene-setting and effortless transitions between moods and functions.

A primary challenge was balancing the budget while achieving a hospitality-level feel within a commercial environment. This was overcome by a strategic application of lighting layers. We employed efficient base-build lighting in general work areas while concentrating bespoke, integrated features—such as luminous walls and illuminated handrails—in key client-facing zones. This ensured the “quiet luxury” vision was delivered where it mattered most, creating a rich and varied experience.

The design relies on high-efficacy, long-life LED technologies from manufacturers with proven sustainable credentials. By using light strategically and integrating a smart DALI control system, the scheme significantly reduces energy consumption. Maintenance is streamlined through the use of high-quality luminaires in accessible track systems, ensuring durability and ease of service.

The success of this approach is evident in the client’s response, who lauded the lighting as both “expressive and dynamic” and highly effective in showcasing their valuable artwork. We are proudest of achieving this seamless integration, where light and architecture are indistinguishable. The lighting does not demand attention; it works in service of the space, creating a timeless, sophisticated environment that truly embodies Allens’ legacy and professional excellence.
