The architect’s vision looked to bring the weathered and run-down establishment back to it’s former glory without compromising it’s unique heritage character. The lighting design aims to follow this lead, working with the original structure in ways that feel connected, honest and authentic. Each element of this project was designed with the utmost consideration to it’s heritage values and the need for the installation to last for another 90 years. The key to the design approach is authenticity and restraint – with care to breath life into the scheme without altering the aesthetic signatures of the site by adding excessive embellishments of light.
Given the variety of spaces amongst the scope, a number of methods were used, but the overarching approach holds true to the building – utilising mostly indirect lighting and targeted accents to express the signature arches and classic detailing. A number of custom luminaires were designed for the project in order to stay true to the heritage character. This includes the semi-indirect spheres within the external façade colonnades, which resonate with the original aesthetic and provide a soft and sinuous luminance through the outer structure.
Looking a little deeper, new and contemporary architectural insertions blend brilliantly into the Pavilion. Examples of these are the central atrium roof structure and the inner-courtyard colonnade pre-cast blade columns. These are worked into the lighting scheme with care and precision, using a series of methods to introduce light into these spaces by capturing and expressing these feature elements without making them feel disconnected to the rest of the building.
The project includes a collection of utility spaces which have been treated with a similar level of consideration. Amenities, music studios, theatre, multi-function rooms, bar, galleries and pottery studio, amongst others. There is a commonality in their lighting approach that feels solid, timeless and purposeful – using quality light sources and strategically crafted custom detailing.
The entire project operates on a DALI-cased lighting control system, providing simplicity, flexibility and energy efficiency throughout.
