UPG’s initial brief was a fun and energetic new bar and restaurant offering for the younger demographic. In response, interior designer Melissa Collison conceptualised a theme inspired by the fictitious biography of the Mexican underground cartels brought to life by stories such as ‘Death Proof’ with a loud dose of Rock & Roll. Electrolight worked closely with Melissa on the initial themes and agreed on a series of spaces and features which supported the notion of a bar and restaurant business, established by the members of an active cartel flirting their status in their world of danger, fast cars, loud music and good times. The brief developed with the concepts: Colour – lots of it – but balanced in hue. Lots of lights – quantity driven, but not by illumination. Drama and spectacle – with order and purpose. Every part of this project is out there to be seen and experienced.
The concept was so bold, the success of the lighting solution relied heavily on an even bolder approach. Colour – lots of it – but balanced in hue. Lots of lights – quantity driven, but not by illumination. Drama and spectacle – with order and purpose. Every part of this project is out there to be seen and experienced. There is literally hundreds of features all linking back to a common theme. The lighting needed to work for the theatre, mood and function. The theatre is obvious, the mood ‘in your face’ and the functional is discrete.
