Elizabeth Quay

Perth, Australia

Elizabeth Quay lighting design by Electrolight

Description

Elizabeth Quay is a major Western Australian mixed-use development project in the Perth central business district delivered by the State Government of Western Australia. Located on the north shore of Perth Water and centred on the landmark Swan Bells, it is named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II and has been described as one of the most significant things to happen in Perth in the last 100 years (according to Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi).

Electrolight has been intimately involved with this project since 2012 and has designed the lighting to all public outdoor spaces, art features and the pedestrian bridge.  The project features a stunning inlet connected by 1.5km of continuous boardwalks and promenades and delivers great public spaces, a future hotel and short stay contemporary accommodation.

Our collaboration with ARM Architecture (the architects for the site masterplan and promenades) was, as always, extremely stimulating. They demanded something out of the ordinary and we responded by giving them a feature-rich scheme with custom lighting poles and fixtures that are integrated fully into their work. Ahead of its time, the precinct is exclusively lit with LED lighting giving the City of Perth an installation which is energy efficient, requires minimal maintenance and looks fabulous.

PROMENADES

Custom light poles designed by ARM and Electrolight, add a unique aesthetic to the Promenades. Pole quantities have been kept to a minimum and located to blend with the hard and soft landscaping. The luminaire housing offers the opportunity to incorporate surveillance (CC TV) or multimedia technology such as Public Address/Sound Systems. In-ground LED uplighting to the underside of the pleached tree canopy provides an intimate and comfortable atmosphere. Continuous concealed LED lighting underneath the bench seating highlights and accents the free flowing form of the landscape furniture.

THE EDGE

The Edge is perceived as providing a consistently illuminated element capable of connecting the

precinct lighting scheme as a whole. Designed by ARM and Electrolight, in conjunction artist Stuart Green, The Edge is a landscape element which incorporates seating and lighting. It creates a continuous glowing form which is visible from both the boulevard and the Island and provides a visual demarcation between land and water.

Colour changing LED light sources are fully integrated within the edge structure and have the ability to display individual colour and patterns to the water and land side of the structure.

THE BRIDGE

The 20-metre high pedestrian and cycling suspension bridge on the bank of the Swan River connects the new promenades, the island and the ferry terminal. Engineered by Arup with lighting design by Electrolight, the Bridge is a centrepiece of the Elizabeth Quay precinct.

The lighting scheme incorporates a number of techniques including uplighting to the towering arches, integrated handrail lighting to provide a soft wash of light across the deck, as well as a bull nosing, colour selectable lighting detail that visually connects the Bridge with The Edge.

The lighting to Elizabeth Quay is fully integrated with architectural and landscaped forms. Our aspiration was to design a lit environment that mirrors and supports the process of re-connecting a city to its river and its people to their place.
