The project brief for the lighting was to work closely with Indyk Architects, the project Interior Designers, to create an exciting and unique cinema experience. Not only should the lighting provide general lighting to the interior space, it should also accentuate the architectural details throughout. Light sources are to be concealed from view where possible to be integrated into the architecture. The prominent architectural details such as deep ceiling coffers and lolly trees were to integrate lighting for a seamless effect. However feature lighting should be accentuated as a prominent visual element that compliments the furniture and joinery.
It was important for a balance in the transition of illumination from the daylight penetrating through the atrium and exterior courtyard through to the darker cinemas. Theatrical drama was to be accentuated through light with the contrast of dark recessive surfaces versus bold, colourful finishes. Lighting controls were to be considered so that the interior space could adapt throughout the day to compensate for daylight streaming into the entry spaces. Colour temperature of the lighting was to be considered and applied accordingly so that the internal spaces feel comfortable from morning through to evening. For the Gold Class lounge it was important that this area had an enhanced premium luxurious aesthetic. Although the space has high ceilings, it is important that the lounge feels intimate and inviting to the targeted clientele.
With five primary interior spaces, each holding a bold purpose, the lighting required a thoughtful application of restraint and precision to accentuate without dilution of the theme.
The lighting design is heavily integrated, enhancing the architecture and pushing the theory of light and dark to create a series of exciting and dramatic spaces which lead toward the cinema entries. An emphasis on lighting for adaptation from the entry spaces, food retail and gathering spaces, the applied luminance is carefully controlled to allow the visitor to fully appreciate each space before entering the darkness of the theatre.
Every part of this project has been designed and selected with the brief in mind. Mood and ambience are paramount. As the flagship, a series of bespoke luminaires, light-art elements and details were conceptualised and designed by Electrolight to form a unique statement for Event’s most modern cinema experience.
