The Great Emu in the Sky is the cultural centrepiece of Transport for NSW’s new M12 Motorway and a welcoming gateway for visitors arriving at or departing from the newly constructed Western Sydney International Airport. Standing at 30 metres tall, the domed ‘nest’ changes it’s appearance at points across the year to reflect the Aboriginal six seasons and tells the Dharug story of the Great Emu constellation.
8 years in the making, the Great Emu in the Sky is a public art collaboration between Indigenous artist group Balarinji, Electrolight and Event Engineering.
The Great Emu in the Sky is sure to become an iconic welcoming statement for visitors arriving via the new Western Sydney International Airport, and is a jewel in the crown for our nation to reveal the stories of Country that underpin Australia’s foundational narrative, acknowledging strong and ubiquitous continuing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural presence and enriching a shared understanding and belonging for all Australians.
