HOTA (Home of the Arts Gallery) is the centrepiece of the Gold Coast cultural precinct and opened to the public on 8 May.
Regarded as the largest art gallery outside of a capital city in Australia, HOTA Gallery has more than 2,000 square metres of exhibition space across six levels, giving it the capacity to host international touring exhibitions as well as smaller and temporary exhibitions. It also has a dedicated children’s gallery and a rooftop bar with views across Surfers Paradise.
Electrolight worked in close collaboration with ARM Architecture to design the lighting for all internal and external areas of the project. The lighting design aimed to create a highly textural, interesting and inviting visual environment.
Our aim for the lighting was to form a partnership with both built elements and hard and soft landscaping so as to encourage public engagement and an impassioned visitor response. An innovative and dynamic lighting treatment that remained respectful and integral with the architecture and urban design was key.
Flexible lighting systems and controls were specified to ensure the Gallery had a future-proofed lighting system able to work with current and future International exhibition requirements. This included the use of Casambi Bluetooth-enabled track lighting to all gallery spaces which provided an enhanced level of control. Key Casambi control benefits include individual addressing, time-scheduling, occupancy based scenes, conservation based time exposure and dynamic dimming.
Functional light fittings were selected for their visually discreet, minimalist aesthetic. Feature lighting will be used in locations only where it complements and supports the interior and architectural intent. Feature lighting was designed to express the Voronoi architectural forms both in the interior spaces and on the facade.
