Facet Studio, the project architects, created a bespoke shoe-box display system for the sneaker store. Electrolight was commissioned to design specialist lighting to the system. Collaboratively the design team have created an innovative and vibrant retail space providing the customer with a unique retail experience. The design captivates the imagination and excites the senses of the consumer.
The store design consists of a wall of 200mm x 600mm plywood boxes which are systematically repeated (over 281 times) and offset. It creates a euphoric effect for one to experience a heightened emotion.
The walls act as both a display within the shop and as the façade which interfaces with the mall. The shop floor is illuminated by the light emitted by the shoeboxes. This effectively makes the device a structural, display and lighting element all in one.
The design mimics a museum type installation, a theme underscored by the touch panel screens which provide background stories of the merchandise effectively schooling one in sneaker culture.
The design of this sneaker store challenges the fundamental concept of a retail shop, shifting away from pre-conceptual notions of retail and consumerism: the academic method of exhibiting the merchandise, which crafts a museum-like experience, elevates the shopping experience to new heights.
The boxes also function as lighting components, elevating the humble sneaker above the everyday and adding extra gravitas to the relevancy of the submission.
The glowing marblo cubes use long life fluorescent lamps which are low wattage and exceed the BCA requirements. The cubes provide a functional level of illumination to the store as well as an aesthetic interactive quality.
