Awarded: IES Lighting Design Award of Commendation 2015 – QLD Chapter
The lighting concept for Town Square was driven by the desire to move away from conventional shopping centre outdoor lighting to a more sophisticated hospitality style feel. The challenge was to create a sense of intimacy, visual interest and discovery but still cater to all of the shopping centre’s safety and functional requirements.
Low level and integrated lighting is used for all major pedestrian thoroughfares, which is then layered with landscape lighting to both the low level plantings and the taller palms to enhance the lush tropical setting. The central pond is encircled by a continuous ribbon of light on the outer perimeter to highlight its curving form. The middle of the pond is accented by RGBW colour changing uplights that illuminate the central palm islands as well as the dynamic water jets.
Large custom planter rings are suspended above the primary entry to the Centrecourt of the Mall, enticing patrons of the mall to step outside and enjoy the tranquillity and lush outdoor landscape.
All luminaires utilise LED light sources that are controlled by an intelligent DALI lighting control system that automatically adjusts the intensity and colour scenes of the lighting throughout the seasons. The budget for the Town Square was very challenging, with no less than three rounds of value management resulting in an overall budget reduction of 50% from what was originally provided. This required very careful and considered design to achieve the intended outcome.
Fresh Food Market Dining Precinct
The lighting design to the Fresh food market is a departure from regular shopping centre food courts, with the aim of creating an authentic and unique “urban” dining experience. Rather than general uniform washing of light, directional track lighting is used to create pockets of light and shade throughout the space. These track lights are concealed in ceiling box elements, which in turn are internally illuminated by LED strip concealed on the top of the lighting track. The result lends the ceiling elements a soft warmth that works in counterpoint against the exposed ceiling. The Track lighting also provides greater flexibility for the centre to illuminate merchandise pop up displays, as well as relocate the loose furniture as required for events.
Brick feature columns and plantings are also highlighted by the track lighting to create a vibrant and engaging backdrop. Large oversized custom drum light features are scattered throughout the Food Market, adding a touch of elegance with their sparkling bespoke spherical pendants.
All luminaires utilise low glare LED light sources that are controlled by an intelligent DALI lighting control system that automatically adjusts the lighting for both day and night mode operation.
