Moxy lighting design by Electrolight

Description

Tasked with setting a new benchmark for contemporary hospitality for the first Moxy hotel in Australia, our journey began in 2020, with a unique concept taking shape and culminating in a design slated for completion in 2023. Our aim was to anticipate the desires of the modern traveller in a post-pandemic world, crafting a bespoke and trendsetting aesthetic that offers a hotel experience like no other.

The comprehensive scope of our undertaking encompassed all guest interface areas, including the Facade, Reception Lobby & Welcome spaces, Ground Floor Lounge spaces, Mezzanine function / meeting rooms, guest amenities (such as the gym, laundry and terrace), as well as guest rooms and corridors. From the project’s inception, feature lighting and illumination stood at the forefront of our design vision, meticulously integrated into the fabric of the architecture to ensure a seamless and striking result that feels honest and authentic, yet functional and eclectic.

The street frontage presents a mixture of architectural elements. Light has been used to elevate the variety of characters displayed across the primary elevation. The entry canopy, adorned with visible lines of light, extends brutally into a series of louvered baffles – with a variety of coloured lighting to signify times of the year and special events. From the custom designed light-art elements to the lift lobby pendants, lighting has been used to tell stories reflective of the location. The level of detail required rigorous coordination with the architect and interior designer to guarantee every detail was refined to perfection, elevating the space to a high level of sophistication. Deliberate use of colour-changing lighting in select areas adds an enchanting character of the Moxy brand, and setting the stage for a memorable experience.

Our dedication to bespoke elements resonated throughout the hotel – with a large number of custom designed luminaires created specifically for this hotel. Drawing inspiration from the captivating steam-punk aesthetic, each custom luminaire was meticulously detailed to embody the essence of the Moxy brand and the Sydney Airport location, while providing purposeful illumination and crafted ambience to every space. Pops of the signature Moxy pink seamlessly blended into the luminaires, adorning finishes or filters over the light sources, imparting a delightful and playful effect without forcing or over-playing the theme.

In the guest rooms, our team made it their mission to integrate custom lighting seamlessly into the joinery elements, and craft bespoke luminaires that speak to the adjacent airport aesthetic, achieving a perfect balance between feature, ambient and functional lighting. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, right down to the rotary knob on the bedside lamps, exemplifying the level of craftsmanship and thoughtfulness that pervaded our design process.
